Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has provided an update on why several key players are missing from the squad for this afternoon’s Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur. Speaking in a pre-match interview with Sky Sports at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Amorim revealed that a combination of injuries and illness has forced multiple absences from the squad.
Among the missing players, in-form forward Amad has been sidelined with an injury, while defender Leny Yoro and midfielders Toby Collyer, Kobbie Mainoo, and Manuel Ugarte are also unavailable. Christian Eriksen is another notable absentee due to illness, meaning United will have to rely on their squad depth for the 16:30 GMT kickoff.
Amorim confirms Amad's injury and other absences
Amorim detailed the nature of the injuries and illnesses affecting his squad, explaining how each player’s absence came about.
"Amad was alone [when he picked up his injury], Ugarte was a kick, Toby [Collyer] and Kobbie [Mainoo] felt something during training. Leny [Yoro] also is sick," he said.
Despite these setbacks, Amorim expressed confidence in the younger players stepping up to fill the gaps.
"It is what it is, but we have the kids [coming into the squad], they have the opportunity to be on the bench, and they are ready to play," he added. "It’s a really hard season, and we have to deal with that, and we are doing that."
When asked if Amad’s injury could rule him out for the remainder of the season, Amorim admitted: “I think so, yeah.”
Young players given a chance to impress
With several first-team players unavailable, Amorim has included eight young prospects on the bench for the crucial Premier League encounter. This presents a significant opportunity for Manchester United’s academy players to gain first-team experience.
Among the substitutes are goalkeeper Elyh Harrison and defenders Harry Amass, Tyler Fredricson, and Ayden Heaven. Midfielders Jack Fletcher, Sekou Kone, and Jack Moorhouse, along with striker Chido Obi, are also in line for potential senior debuts if called upon.
Veteran defender Victor Lindelof is the only experienced player on the bench, further highlighting United’s reliance on youth in this fixture.
Manchester United faces a tough challenge
The absence of key players adds to the challenge for Manchester United as they prepare to face a strong Tottenham side. Amorim’s team has already had to navigate a demanding season, and the latest setbacks only increase the pressure on the squad.
Despite these difficulties, Amorim remains optimistic about the squad’s ability to cope. The inclusion of young players may also provide fresh energy and enthusiasm, potentially giving United an unexpected advantage against Spurs.
As kickoff approaches, all eyes will be on the emerging talents who may get their chance to impress on a big stage.
