Honda has shown signs of improvement in MotoGP, particularly after the latest tests and the Thai GP. The Japanese manufacturer, which has struggled in recent seasons, appears to have made some gains in competitiveness. However, Johann Zarco of Castrol Honda LCR remains cautious about Honda’s true progress, pointing out that external factors may have contributed to the improved results.
Fewer Ducatis influencing results
Speaking to Canal+, Zarco highlighted a crucial element affecting Honda’s recent top-ten finishes: the reduced number of Ducati bikes on the grid. The French rider believes this shift has played a significant role in Honda’s better placements, rather than a major breakthrough in performance.
“Regarding the positions we gained in the top ten, I think [it’s because] there are fewer Ducatis, and that plays quite a big role in our favor.”
With Ducati previously dominating the grid with eight bikes, the reduction has slightly reshaped the competitive landscape. Fewer Ducatis mean fewer direct competitors for Honda, allowing Zarco and his teammates to capitalize on openings that were much harder to come by in previous seasons.
KTM’s struggles and Honda’s gradual progress
While Honda has seen relative improvements, Zarco pointed out that KTM appears to be experiencing difficulties. The Austrian manufacturer, which has been a rising force in MotoGP, has faced challenges that may have indirectly benefited Honda.
“Some riders are having a tough time right now, those on KTMs. It’s not just a major evolution from Honda because we still have the same difficulties and are a step behind Ducati, but at least we can enjoy the races a bit more.”
This statement underlines Zarco’s measured approach. While Honda has made progress, it remains a step behind Ducati, which continues to set the benchmark. The improvements are noticeable, but Honda is still dealing with persistent challenges that prevent it from consistently competing at the front.
Championship dynamics benefiting Honda
Beyond technical advancements, Zarco emphasized how shifting dynamics in the championship have also helped Honda riders gain better results. Compared to last season, Honda now finds itself in battles that seemed impossible before, even challenging Aprilia, KTM, and some Ducati riders.
“There are changes in the championship, I repeat, and that’s also what helps us gain some positions in the standings. Last year, it was impossible to fight with an Aprilia or a KTM. We even battled with the Ducatis because [Fabio] Di Giannantonio and Fermín Aldeguer finished behind us. This is good.”
This shift is significant for Honda, as it suggests that while the manufacturer’s improvements are incremental, they are still translating into more competitive performances. However, the question remains whether Honda can sustain this trajectory as the season progresses and rival manufacturers continue their development.
A cautious but hopeful outlook
Zarco’s comments reflect a realistic view of Honda’s current state in MotoGP. While the team has made strides, it is not yet at the level to consistently challenge Ducati or even Aprilia and KTM on certain tracks. The upcoming races will provide a clearer picture of whether Honda’s recent improvements are sustainable or if external factors have temporarily inflated their competitiveness.
For now, Honda appears to be on a path toward recovery, but there is still a long road ahead before it can truly return to its former dominance.
