Fabio Di Giannantonio has secured one of the most desirable rides in MotoGP this season, piloting a factory-spec Ducati for VR46. However, his 2025 campaign began with a tough outing at the Thailand Grand Prix.

The Italian struggled to find his rhythm after missing nearly all of pre-season testing due to an injury sustained while performing a wheelie. The lack of preparation showed in Buriram, where he retired from the Sprint race after his bike overheated in the intense heat. He managed to finish 10th in the main race, securing his first points of the season.

Among Ducati’s satellite riders, Alex Marquez emerged as the standout performer in Thailand, finishing second in both races behind his brother Marc Marquez and ahead of reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia. Franco Morbidelli also delivered a stronger weekend than Di Giannantonio, adding to the pressure on the VR46 rider.

With Pramac’s departure from Ducati’s setup, VR46 has become the manufacturer’s top satellite team. This elevates Di Giannantonio’s role within the team and increases expectations for his performance. Having claimed his maiden MotoGP victory at the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, he now has the equipment and team backing to fight for consistent podium finishes.

One of the major advantages of racing for VR46 is the guidance of Valentino Rossi. Di Giannantonio is a member of Rossi’s prestigious academy, benefiting from mentorship that extends beyond just racing techniques.

Speaking to Crash, he welcomed Rossi’s decision to attend more races in 2025, believing it will serve as an extra boost for the team. He described Rossi as a natural teacher who shares knowledge in an effortless way, whether about racing strategy or life in general. He added that Rossi had already helped him improve his riding approach last season and expressed excitement at the prospect of learning even more with the MotoGP legend attending more races.

Di Giannantonio said that having Rossi around would be a major source of motivation, not just for him but for the entire team. The experience and presence of the seven-time premier class champion could provide the extra push needed for VR46 to challenge at the front more consistently.

Rossi’s increasing involvement in VR46’s MotoGP future

While Rossi has largely treated his MotoGP team as a business venture, focusing more on his own racing career in the World Endurance Championship, there are signs that he is becoming more involved this season.

A journalist recently noted that as long as VR46 remains financially stable, Rossi has preferred to take a hands-off approach. However, this stance may be shifting, as he is set to make more frequent appearances at races.

According to team manager Pablo Nieto, Rossi has given a simple directive to his riders: have fun. While seemingly straightforward, this message underscores the link between enjoyment and performance on the track. A relaxed and confident team environment could translate into better results throughout the season.

As the MotoGP season moves to Argentina, Di Giannantonio and VR46 will look to capitalize on their strong history at the circuit. The team secured its first-ever MotoGP victory there in 2023, with Marco Bezzecchi taking the win.

Bezzecchi remains responsible for all three of VR46’s premier-class victories, but Di Giannantonio will be eager to add his name to the list as he aims for a breakthrough performance in 2025.
