The Indian Premier League 2025 season saw another shift in the standings as Mumbai Indians beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in a convincing fashion at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday night. With both batters and bowlers contributing significantly, the five-time IPL champions cruised to a four-wicket victory, chasing down a moderate target with 11 balls to spare.
This win not only gives Mumbai a much-needed lift in what has been an up-and-down season so far, but also highlights the growing role of all-rounder Will Jacks, whose performance on both fronts helped stabilize the match and steer it Mumbai’s way.
Will Jacks leads with bat and ball
The English all-rounder made a powerful statement in the game, showcasing why he’s such a valuable asset in the T20 format. Jacks first impressed with the ball, picking up two crucial wickets that slowed Hyderabad’s momentum in the middle overs. His spell helped curb what was shaping up to be a dangerous innings from the opposition.
Later, during the chase, Jacks displayed great composure with the bat, scoring a brisk 36 off just 26 deliveries. His innings came at a time when Mumbai needed to stabilize their chase, and he played that anchor role perfectly.
For Jacks, this match was a defining one in the IPL 2025 season, and possibly a turning point for Mumbai's campaign as well.
Strong bowling restricts Hyderabad to 162
Winning the toss, Mumbai Indians elected to bowl first on what appeared to be a slow, tricky pitch. Their decision paid off, as their bowlers delivered a disciplined performance. Jasprit Bumrah continued his good form with accurate lines and tight economy, while Jacks chipped in with vital middle-over breakthroughs.
Sunrisers Hyderabad got off to a decent start with openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head putting together a 59-run stand. Sharma’s 40 off 28 balls gave them early momentum, but his dismissal in the eighth over slowed the pace of the innings. Head’s departure soon after, coupled with a cheap dismissal of Kishan for just two runs, saw Hyderabad stalling at 83 for three by the 12th over.
Though Heinrich Klaasen fought back with a gritty 37, and Aniket Verma added a late flurry with his quickfire 18 off eight balls, Hyderabad's total of 162 for five seemed below par given the conditions.
Mumbai’s chase built on a solid foundation
Mumbai’s response was measured and steady, avoiding any major hiccups. Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickleton provided a good start, adding 44 runs for the first wicket. Sharma scored 26, while Rickleton added 31 before both were dismissed before the halfway point.
By the end of the 10th over, Mumbai were well poised at 70 for two. From there, it was about keeping the momentum steady and waiting for the right moment to accelerate. Jacks’ contribution in the middle overs kept the run rate ticking along. He was well-supported by Suryakumar Yadav, who chipped in with 26 runs of his own.
Skipper Hardik Pandya then played the finisher’s role, smashing 21 runs off just nine balls, helping Mumbai cross the finish line with Tilak Varma, who stayed unbeaten on 21.
The win came with 11 deliveries remaining, underlining the comfort with which Mumbai chased the total.
Pandya praises disciplined bowling
Speaking after the match, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya highlighted the team’s bowling effort as the key to victory.
"The way we bowled was very smart and spot on," said Pandya. "We stuck to simple, basic plans. Once the pressure to get boundaries eased in the second innings, we pushed the pedal at the end."
It was a much-needed moment of relief for Pandya, who has been under pressure to steer his side back into form after a wobbly start to the season. With this win, Mumbai now has three victories from seven matches and moves into the thick of the mid-table battle.
Cummins admits Hyderabad didn’t adapt to conditions
Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins admitted that his team struggled to adapt to the Wankhede surface.
"It was not the easiest wicket," Cummins said after the match. "We’ve got to play well away from home to make the finals. Unfortunately, we haven’t clicked yet."
The Hyderabad side, although showing promise with individual performances, has yet to consistently put together complete performances this season. Their top-order remains hit-or-miss, and their death bowling lacked the punch to stop Mumbai’s lower-order hitters.
Mumbai looking to build on momentum
With this victory, Mumbai Indians find themselves back in the conversation for the playoffs. Though it’s still early in the IPL 2025 campaign, every win matters in such a tightly contested tournament.
The positive takeaways are plenty: Will Jacks stepping up as an all-round force, Rohit Sharma looking solid at the top, and Pandya finding form with both captaincy and bat. Their bowlers, too, especially Bumrah and Jacks, have shown that they can handle pressure situations.
The next few games will be crucial for Mumbai. If they can string together back-to-back wins, they’ll find themselves moving quickly up the table. More importantly, they’ll begin to re-establish their aura of dominance that made them five-time champions.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, on the other hand, need to regroup quickly. With just a few wins so far and problems both with consistency and finishing games, Cummins and company must find the right combinations soon, especially when playing on the road.
Looking ahead to upcoming fixtures
Mumbai Indians will next face a strong Delhi Capitals side, a match that could define their momentum going into the mid-season phase. Sunrisers Hyderabad will look to bounce back when they meet Rajasthan Royals in their next game.
As IPL 2025 continues to throw up surprises, Mumbai Indians beating Sunrisers Hyderabad might be just the spark they needed to ignite a playoff run. With fresh confidence and key players stepping up, Mumbai’s fans have reason to believe again.
