Marc Marquez made a stunning start to the 2025 MotoGP season, securing victory on his factory Ducati debut at the Thailand GP. That win not only marked his first race triumph since switching to Ducati but also brought his total number of grand prix victories to 89 across all classes.
Now, as the MotoGP paddock heads to Argentina, Marquez has the opportunity to reach another milestone. A victory at Termas de Río Hondo would see him match the late Angel Nieto’s 90 career wins, making him Spain’s joint-most successful grand prix rider in terms of race victories.
Chasing a historic milestone
Marquez’s current tally of 89 wins places him fourth on the all-time grand prix winners’ list. He surpassed Mike Hailwood’s 76 victories in 2019, the year he won his eighth and most recent world championship. Since then, he has been chasing down Spain’s legendary Angel Nieto, who remains third on the list with 90 career wins.
The only riders ahead of Nieto and Marquez in the all-time rankings are Italy’s Giacomo Agostini, who leads with 122 wins, and Valentino Rossi, who claimed 115 victories during his illustrious career.
With a strong history at Termas de Río Hondo, Marquez will be confident heading into the Argentina GP, knowing that a win would elevate him into even more elite company.
A track that favors Marquez
Marquez has enjoyed success at the Argentina GP in the past, with three victories at the Termas de Río Hondo circuit. His most recent appearance there in 2019 saw him dominate the race, winning by almost ten seconds. That performance remains a strong reference point as he looks to repeat his success this weekend.
However, one statistic works against Marquez. The last time he won the opening two races of a MotoGP season was in 2014, the year he claimed his second world title with ten consecutive victories. Since then, he has struggled to maintain early-season dominance across multiple rounds.
Regardless, his experience and the advantage of the factory Ducati make him a strong contender for victory in Argentina.
Podium records within reach
Even if Marquez does not secure a win, a podium finish would see him equal another MotoGP legend. A top-three result at Termas de Río Hondo would bring his total grand prix podiums to 152, tying him with Jorge Lorenzo on the all-time rostrum list.
Should Marquez finish on the podium in Argentina and then again in the following rounds, he would edge closer to Dani Pedrosa’s tally of 153. Beyond that, only Rossi (235) and Agostini (159) have recorded more podium finishes in grand prix history.
The numbers highlight Marquez’s incredible consistency over the years, and another strong result in Argentina would further cement his status as one of the sport’s greatest riders.
Ducati’s dominance continues
While Marquez’s personal achievements will be a major storyline, Ducati also has a significant record in sight. If any Ducati rider wins in Argentina, it would mark the manufacturer’s 19th consecutive grand prix victory. This would move them closer to Honda’s all-time record of 22 straight wins, set between the Malaysian GP in 1997 and the Dutch TT in 1998.
Ducati’s stranglehold on MotoGP has been evident in recent seasons, with their bikes proving to be the most competitive on the grid. With Marquez, reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia, and a host of other strong Ducati riders, the Italian brand is well-positioned to extend its dominant streak.
A pivotal weekend ahead
As the MotoGP field gears up for the Argentina GP, all eyes will be on Marquez and his pursuit of a historic 90th career win. His track record at Termas de Río Hondo suggests he will be a strong contender, but with fierce competition from Bagnaia, Jorge Martin, and other Ducati riders, the race is far from decided.
Whether Marquez reaches the milestone this weekend or not, his return to winning form with Ducati has already added another thrilling chapter to his career. The 2025 MotoGP season is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent years, and Argentina could be the stage for yet another unforgettable moment.
